Common Questions
Can I burn it indoors?
No. Never. Outdoor use only, in open air, with nothing but sky above it.
This is the one rule on this page with no exceptions. Smokeless means the visible smoke gets burned off. It does not mean the fire stops producing carbon monoxide, and it never will. Carbon monoxide has no smell and no color, a wood fire in an enclosed space builds it up fast, and burning fuel indoors kills people every year.
No house, no apartment, no garage, no shed, no basement, no tent, no camper or RV, no screened porch, no covered patio, and nothing overhead like an awning, umbrella or low branches. If you cannot see open sky above it, do not light it.
Is it really smokeless?
It is dramatically less smoke, not magic. You get a puff at startup while the walls come up to temperature, then the secondary burn kicks in and it runs clean. Two things are on you. Use dry fuel, because damp pellets and green twigs smoke in anything. And keep every piece below the top ring, since that is where the second burn happens. Nine times out of ten a smoking unit is loaded too tall.
How big is it, really?
Five and a half inches across and eight inches tall, about the size of a large coffee canister. This is a tabletop fire, small on purpose. If you want something to circle six chairs around, this is not it. If you want real flame on a table where a fire pit would never fit, this is exactly it.
Will it keep me warm?
No, and we would rather tell you now. At this size it is for light, flame and marshmallows. You feel it with your hands over it, but it will not heat a patio or replace a heater. What it does is give you the reason everybody stays at the table.
What can I burn in it?
Wood pellets, dry twigs, pinecones, wood chips and small kindling. Splits and logs will not fit at this size. Never use gasoline, lighter fluid, alcohol, gel fuel or any liquid accelerant. Solid wood fuel only.
How long does one load burn?
Roughly 20 to 30 minutes on a full load of pellets, then you top it up. That is normal for a wood burning unit this size. Most people add a handful at a time and keep it going as long as they are sitting there.
Will it damage my table?
The fireproof mat is included for exactly this reason. Lay it down first, then set the pit on it, on a level surface. The mat shields against heat and falling embers, but it is not a heatproof floor, so on wood, painted or plastic tables we also recommend a stone tile or trivet underneath for an air gap. Never set it directly on glass. Keep it clear of umbrellas, railings, tablecloths and low branches.
Can I use it on a balcony?
Physically yes, and that is what a lot of people buy it for. Legally, check first. Many buildings, leases, HOAs and local fire codes restrict open flame on balconies and decks, and some ban it outright. Those rules apply to this the same as anything else. Know your rules before you light it.
How do I put it out?
Let it burn down and go out on its own, or smother it with sand. Do not pour water into hot stainless, the thermal shock can warp it. Let everything cool completely before you move it or dump the ash, and remember the whole unit gets extremely hot.
Anything I should know before I light it?
Outdoors only, on a level non combustible surface, with the mat down and nothing flammable within three feet. Never leave it unattended, keep kids and pets from reaching it, and keep water or an extinguisher nearby. Use gloves or tongs and never move it while lit. Check your local fire restrictions and any building, HOA or campground rules.
